After Getting 5 Offers, Here's What I Did Right

Opening

Last week I rejected 4 offers and accepted 1.

This isn't a humblebrag. Three months ago, I was anxiously refreshing job boards, sending resumes into the void, and failing interview after interview.

From "no responses" to "5 offers" — I didn't suddenly become amazing. I just did a few things right. Things anyone can replicate.

This article is me sharing those lessons with you.

My Background: Ordinary, But I Didn't Accept It

Let me start with my baseline, so you know this isn't a "top school + big tech" success story:

  • Education: Regular university, non-CS major
  • Experience: 3 years, always at a small-to-mid company
  • Tech Stack: React + Node.js, no big tech pedigree
  • Projects: Built some internal systems, no star products

What did I have? Just a refusal to be mediocre, and the willingness to change.

If you're "ordinary" like me, this article is for you.

What I Did Right: 5 Key Decisions

Looking back at these three months, my biggest improvement wasn't a tech breakthrough — it was a complete upgrade of my job search strategy.

I made 5 key decisions, and each one doubled my success rate.

Decision 1: I Stopped Spray-and-Pray

The Old Me

Open job boards, apply to every "Frontend Engineer" posting. 20 applications a day, 100 a week.

Result? Response rate under 5%.

The New Me

I changed my approach:

  1. Only apply to jobs with >70% match

    • Carefully read the JD, compare with my skills
    • Skip mismatched ones, don't waste time
  2. Maximum 5 applications per day

    • Research each company thoroughly
    • Write tailored cover letters
  3. Build a "Target Company List"

    • List 20 companies I most want to join
    • Follow their updates, look for opportunities

The Result

Application volume dropped 80%, interview invitation rate went from 5% to 40%.

Core Logic: Quality > Quantity. Better to send 10 targeted applications than 100 into the void.

Decision 2: I Changed My Resume

The Old Me

My resume said:

Responsible for frontend development of company internal systems using React.

HR learned nothing from this sentence.

The New Me

I learned to speak with data:

Led the rewrite of our core management system, reducing page load time from 3.2s to 1.1s, improving user satisfaction by 35%. Through component-based development, increased development efficiency by 50%, enabling team growth from 4 to 8 engineers.

My Resume Formula

Action + Specific Project + Quantifiable Result + Tech Highlight

Example Comparison:

❌ Wrong Way✅ Right Way
Responsible for frontend developmentLed development of 3 core modules serving 100K+ users
Used ReactBuilt with React 18, achieving < 1s first paint
Participated in team collaborationLed 4-person team, 100% on-time delivery

The Result

Resume pass rate went from 10% to 60%.

Core Logic: HR doesn't care what you "did" — they care what you "achieved".

Decision 3: I Learned to "Reverse Interview"

The Old Me

End of interview, HR asks: "Do you have any questions for us?"

Me: "Uhh... no."

This is a huge mistake.

The New Me

I prepared a "question list" and asked at every interview:

About the Role:

  • What's the biggest challenge in this position?
  • What are the team's current priorities?
  • What are the expectations for the first 3 months?

About the Team:

  • What's the tech stack and development process?
  • How large is the team? How do you collaborate?
  • What qualities do you value most in engineers?

About the Company:

  • What's the company's growth plan for the next year?
  • How is this business line performing?
  • How does the company support employee career development?

Why This Matters?

  1. Shows professionalism: Good questions impress more than good answers
  2. Gets key information: Helps you make the right offer decision
  3. Creates equal dialogue: Interviewing is two-way selection, not one-way judgment

The Result

Interviewers' feedback improved noticeably. Several HR reps even said: "Your questions show real depth."

Core Logic: Candidates who ask good questions are more valuable than those who only answer.

Decision 4: I Started Telling Stories

The Old Me

Interviewer: "Tell me about your biggest challenge."

Me: "Uhh... the project timeline was tight, so we worked overtime and finished."

Interviewer's inner thought: Another candidate with no highlights.

The New Me

I use the STAR method to tell stories:

S (Situation)

Last year during Double 11, our order system crashed during peak traffic.

T (Task)

As frontend lead, I needed to fix it within 24 hours and ensure it wouldn't happen again.

A (Action)

I analyzed the crash cause — frontend requests were too frequent. I did three things:

  1. Implemented request queue to control concurrency
  2. Added local caching to reduce duplicate requests
  3. Coordinated with backend to optimize API responses

R (Result)

System ran stably, zero incidents during Double 11. This solution was later adopted by other projects.

My STAR Template

Situation: What was the context? (Time, place, project)
Task: What problem needed solving? What was the goal?
Action: What specifically did I do? (Step by step)
Result: What was achieved? (Use numbers)

The Result

Interviewers were impressed by my project experience. 3 companies proactively asked: "Can you explain this solution in more detail?"

Core Logic: Stories are more persuasive than statements. Details are more compelling than generalizations.

Decision 5: I Used AI Tools

The Old Me

I resisted AI, thinking using it was "cheating".

The New Me

I realized: AI doesn't replace you — it amplifies you.

How I use AI tools:

1. Resume Optimization

  • Let AI polish my resume wording
  • Check for quantifiable achievements
  • Optimize keyword matching

2. Interview Preparation

  • Simulate interview Q&A
  • Generate potential questions
  • Practice STAR stories

3. Technical Learning

  • Quickly understand new concepts
  • Generate code examples
  • Summarize technical articles

⚠️ Important Note

AI is a tool, not a crutch:

  • ✅ Use AI to boost efficiency
  • ✅ Use AI to fill gaps
  • ❌ Don't let AI think for you
  • ❌ Don't fully rely on AI answers

The Result

Preparation time cut 50%, interview performance improved 100%.

Core Logic: Candidates who use AI have a competitive advantage over those who don't.

Comparing 5 Offers: How I Chose

After getting offers, I did a detailed comparison:

DimensionOffer AOffer BOffer COffer DOffer E (Final Choice)
Salary25K28K22K30K26K
Company SizeBig TechStartupMid-sizeMNCGrowth Company
Business OutlookStableHigh RiskAverageShrinkingHigh Growth
Tech GrowthMediumHighLowMediumHigh
Team CultureUnknownUnknownGoodUnknownGood (from interview)
Commute1.5h0.5h1h2h0.5h
Overall Score7570656085

My Selection Logic

  1. Look beyond salary: The 30K MNC was in shrinking phase, too risky
  2. Value growth potential: Growth company > big tech cog
  3. Consider quality of life: 1.5h commute would kill happiness
  4. Trust intuition: I clicked well with my future manager during the interview

The Final Decision

I chose Offer E: Moderate salary, but great business prospects, excellent team vibe, and convenient commute.

Core Logic: Choosing an offer isn't about the highest number — it's about the best fit for your path.

My Advice to You: Replicate My Method

If you're job hunting too, here's what I want to tell you:

Stop Ineffective Efforts

  • ❌ Don't spray-and-pray resumes
  • ❌ Don't blindly grind coding problems
  • ❌ Don't wait for opportunities

Start Targeted Actions

  • ✅ Only apply to high-match positions
  • ✅ Rewrite your resume with data
  • ✅ Prepare high-quality questions
  • ✅ Tell stories with STAR
  • ✅ Use AI to boost efficiency

Believe in Yourself

It took me 3 months to go from "no responses" to "5 offers".

You don't need to be smarter than me — you just need to start taking action earlier than I did.
